Photo: Paddle boats and canoes on Town Lake, Austin.

The lake (formerly known as a river) is the place to be on a summer afternoon.

Paddle boats and canoes are allowed on "Town Lake," a part of our lake system that winds through Austin.

Motor boats and skiers use Lake Austin and Lake Travis.

Lake activities are one of our top things to do in Austin.

Fran's is a great old time thing to do in Austin.

Fran's Hamburgers has been here since 1973, and they still make a good burger and onion rings.

Things To Do In Austin.

Here are some old timy things to do in Austin - the kind of things you would do in the afternoon, without very much of a time schedule. They give you a feel for some of the businesses that started in Austin and have been here a long time.

Paramount Theater. See a play at the old timey Paramount Theater at 713 Congress Avenue. In the summer, they show classic movies.

Las Palomas. A best kept secret is the interior Mexican food at Las Palomas, located in a shopping center at the corner of Bee Cave Rd and Walsh Tarlton. The Las Palomas margarita is one of the best in Austin — and that's saying a lot!

Barton Creek Greenbelt. Spend Sunday afternoon, walking, biking or floating down the Barton Creek Greenbelt. Take some sun screen!

Salt Lick. Take your family to the Salt Lick, for Austin’s best barbeque and atmosphere. You can get married there too! (512-894-3117)

Jeffrey’s. Enjoy a special anniversary dinner, Austin style, at Jeffrey’s — a tiny restaurant in old Clarksville neighborhood since 1975. (512-477-5584)

Hofbrau. Hop in to the Hofbrau on West 6th. It’s now air conditioned. Plastic tables, no menus, no prices, no nonsense. Just good steaks, home fries and little iceberg lettuce salads with green olives.

Frisco. The Frisco is an old favorite for great burgers, steaks and breakfasts. You won’t leave without a piece of one of those pies sitting the counter.

Dry Creek Saloon. There is nothing older than Dry Creek Saloon on Mount Bonnell Road. Sit out on the deck, listen to the jukebox, have a beer and mind your own business. (A link? Of course not!)

Whole Earth Provision Company, at 10th and Lamar, is an Austin grown store where you can buy neat outdoorsy stuff and comfortable shoes.

Whole Foods Market. Eat lunch and take home some groceries at the Whole Foot Market, at 6th and Lamar. It began as a small grocery store in 1980, and is now the nation’s largest retailer of organic foods. Then visit Book People across the street for coffee and book browsing.

Stop by Amy's Ice Cream, at 1012 W. 6th Street, for a scoop of homemade ice cream and toppings.

Enjoy some Tex Mex at Guero's, at 1412 South Congress, or Taco Xpress at 2529 S Lamar. They've got the casual atmosphere that Austin is known for.

Chuy's, at 1728 Barton Springs, is a fun Mexican food place with big margaritas. Decor is Elvis, paper mache and hubcaps.

Deep Eddy Pool. Splash Party Movie Nights are a great way to spend a summer evening at Deep Eddy - swim in the pool, then sit on a blanket and see a movie.

Take an overnight camping trip to Krause Springs, a great swimming hole. Located 34 miles west of Austin, Krause Springs is a private park operated by the Krause family, who live on the property. (830-693-4181)

Valued visitors,

I remember..... lunching at Schlotsky's when it was a tiny shop on South Congress.....when Michael Dell (himself) sold me my first computer out of the trunk of his car, and came to our house to hook it up.....when I shopped at SaferWay Grocery and John Mackey (Whole Foods Market) advised on regular vs decaf coffee.

A lot has changed since then, and Austin has really grown, but the new and old have merged in a fabulous way, making Austin a stronger and more interesting city for all of us.

Call us if you are planning a move, and we will share our sense of Austin with you.
